Easy Lifeにこの前インタビューしてきたんですけど、それに引き続き、洋楽アーティストに直接話を聞いちゃうぞシリーズ第2弾という事でね。僕がやるのはインタビューではなくて、「今回の作品はどうだった？」っていうよりも、僕も一応アーティストですから、アーティストとアーティストがフェスで裏で会って世間話したような感じでお届けするような。インタビューよりも“Conversation"て感じですかね？Converviewみたいな感じかな？造語作っちゃおうかなって感じですけど。逆に言うとここでしか聞けない、アーティスト同士のちょっとした会話みたいな、貴重なConversationをお送りしたいと思います。

川上「元気です、元気です。うん、うん、うん、うん。
　　　うん、マイク使ってくださいね。」

Dawson「ああ、そうか、ごめん。」

Luke「そうか、うん、うん、うん。」

Dawson「マイクを通してね。」

Dawson「了解。」

川上「明日ライヴですよね。」

Col「ああ。」

Dawson「うん。」

川上「初めての日本で初めてのライブ？」

Dawson「あぁ、初めての日本だよ。日本に来れて超、超ワクワクしている。いつか行ってみたいって昔から夢見ていた国なんだ。」

川上「そうなんだ。」

Dawson「あぁ。そして明日はお客さんが実際に見に来てくれるというのがまだ実感がわかなくて。わかるよね？なんか旅行で街中を観光しているような気分なんだ。だけどライヴの為の来日というのが本当に嬉しい。だからすごく楽しみにしているし、興奮もしている。」

川上「いいですね、いいですね。（ライヴは）一日だけなんだよね？」

Luke「そう。」

川上「OK.」

Luke「そう、ライヴは一日で次は韓国へ行く。」

川上「（東京でライブは代官山でやるんだよね？）代官山は渋谷に近い。渋谷は知っているよね？」

Dawson「あぁ。実は渋谷に滞在しているんだ。」

川上「そして “cough drops”がリリースされましたね。聴きましたよ。すごく、すごく良かった。最高だ。」

Dawson「ありがとう。」

川上「うん、うん。」

Dawson「本当にありがとう。」

川上「すごく良かった。制作はどうでした？レコーディング等について聞いてもいいかな？」

Luke「うん、あんまり覚えてないけど。ちょっと前に作ったんだけど実はクールな曲なんだ。まずはライヴで演奏するところから始まり、それが自然発生的にというかライヴで聴いた人たちが気に入ってくれて。ライヴ映えする曲でわかりやすいんだと思う。パンデミックから抜け出してライヴ活動が再開されるようになってライヴ向きな曲を書きたくなったんだ。ストリーミング用の曲を書くのは簡単な場合もあるけどさ。。。2年間そういう生活をしていた訳だし。ずっと寝室にこもって曲作りに励んでいたからさ。でもとにかくライヴ向きな曲だから演奏するのが大好きな1曲なんだ。」

川上「君たちはロサンゼルス、それともニューヨーク派？」

Dawson「音楽的に？それともサーフィンの話？」

川上「サーフィン。」

Dawson「僕らは全員、（車で）ロスから1時間半ぐらいのところにあるサンディエゴ出身でそこでずっとサーフィンをしてきた。だからそこが僕らの心のよりどころなんだ。」

Col「ウエストコーストは最高なんだ。」

Dawson「そう、東海岸はけっこう冷えたりするからね。」

川上「僕はアレキサンドロスというバンドをやってるんだけど」

Dawson「それはすごくクールだね。」

川上「ニューヨークでレコーディングしたんだけど」

Col「いいね。レコーディングはどこら辺で？」

川上「確かブルックリン。」

Dawson「うん。」

川上「とニュージャージー。うん、うん。」

Dawson「そうなんだ、OK。クールだね。」

川上「すごく良かったんだ、すごく良かった。」

Dawson「チェックするよ。」

川上「是非そうしてください。」

Dawson「どんな音楽なのか聴いてみたい。」

川上「でもロックンロール的な音楽だったらロスに行くべきだよね。みんなそう言うし。」

almost monday「確かに。」

川上「そう聞いたので（ロスでレコーディングできる日を）楽しみにしている。」

Dawson「うん、確かにこの10年間でロサンゼルスはあらゆる音楽の巨大な拠点になっている。もちろん2000年代の頭はストロークス等ニューヨーク出身のバンドが大活躍していたけど、うん。でもアーティストにとってニューヨークは住むには物価が高すぎる。売れないアーティストは特に。だから多くがロサンゼルスに住んでるんだ。」

川上「日本は今のところどう？」

Luke「すごくクールだよ。先ほども言ったように渋谷に泊まっているのでその周辺を散歩したり、昨夜はカラオケにいったよ。」

川上「カラオケに行ったんだ。そうなんだ。」

Luke「楽しかった。ジャパニーズバーベキューも食べに行ったけどすごくおいしかった。」

川上「焼肉ね。」

Luke「そう。」

川上「うん、うん、うん。」

Luke「すごく…と言うか、主な違いを感じるのは路地裏があるってことかな。大都市なのにこういう路地裏ってすごく珍しいよね。後はいろんな小さいバーがあったり、そういうのを見るとクールだと思うんだ。」

川上「日本にはいつ着いたの？」

Luke「二日前かな？」

川上「二日前か。OK.じゃあ雨だったよね？雨だったよね。」

Dawson「いや、実は天気が良かったんだよ。今のところ天候に恵まれている。」

川上「いいね。日本って雨が降りがちだし湿気もある。だから旅行にはこの時期が最適。一か月前は暑かったんだよ。ところで君たちは日本のアニメや文化に興味があるとか。『HUNTER×HUNTER』にはまってるんだって？」

Luke「そう、ドーソンに教えてもらってね。」

Col「実は（ツアー中の）ホテル生活が続いていた時期にファーストシーズンをみんなで見ていたんだ。」

川上「『HUNTER × HUNTER』の前の『幽☆遊☆白書』って知ってる？」

Dawson「知らない。」

川上「知らないか。そうか。僕はそっちにはまってたんだよ。」

Dawson「そうか。」

川上「僕は世代的に『幽☆遊☆白書』なんだ。」

Dawson「『HUNTER × HUNTER』 は…『HUNTER × HUNTER』は９０年代の作品だよね？それの新バージョンみたいなのができて。」

川上「そう、そう、そう。」

Dawson「アニメでね。」

川上「２０００年に入ってから有名になった。」

Dawson「そんな感じだね。」

川上「９０年代は『幽☆遊☆白書』なんだ。プレってことで。」

Dawson「なるほど。」

川上「世代のギャップだね。」

Dawson「チェックしてみるよ。是非チェックしてみたい。」

川上「僕らの世代にとって『幽☆遊☆白書』はすごく、」

Dawson「わかる。『HUNTER × HUNTER』よりも良いって事？」

川上「そう思う。『幽☆遊☆白書』。」

Dawson「わかった。」

川上「この番組、僕の番組は『おと、をかし』と言ってね。土曜の15時から放送しているんだ。この番組にぴったりなお勧めのアーティストを教えてもらえないかな。君たち以外で。」

Col「番組にかけるアーティストってことだね。」

川上「その通り。もしくは君たちが最も影響を受けたアーティストとか。」

Col「影響ね。みんなそれぞれ違うんだけど、全員好きなのは、う～ん…みんなストロークスは大好きだ。」

川上「ストロークスね、うん。」

Col「シャックスも最近よく聴いている。ビーチ・ハウスも好きだし、そうだね、好きなアーティストはたくさんいるけど。アークティック・モンキーズとかも。」

Luke「ベイブ・レインボー。」

川上 「いいね。君たちの曲もかけるんだけど、その前にお勧めを教えてくれないかな。日本のファンの皆さんに聴かせたい一曲。」

Dawson「う～ん。1曲。」

Luke「一曲。」

Dawson「う～ん、だったらポンド の “Elvis’ Flaming Star”かな。」

川上「OK.」

Luke「あの曲は大好きだ。」

川上「OK。ありがとう。」

Dawson「最も好きな1曲なんだ。」

川上「じゃあ、君たちに、なんて言うんだろな。曲紹介をしてもらいたい。これがエンディングなんだけど。『おと、をかし』って言ってもらえるかな？」

Dawson「オト、ヲカシ？」

Dawson) Oh yeah, sorry.

Luke) Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.

Dawson) Through the mic.

Dawson) Gotcha.

Yoohei) So you gotta gig tomorrow.

Col) Un-hunh.

Dawson) Yup.

Yoohei) Is this your first time being here and doing a gig here in Japan？

Dawson) Yeah, first time in Japan. Um, we are very, very excited about being here. I think this is a place that we’ve dreamed of coming for a very, very long time.

Yoohei) Oh really.

Dawson) And uh, yeah, I still can’t believe there’s people coming tomorrow. You know what I mean? It feels almost like we’re on vacation or just like here to see the city. And it’s so cool that we’re here to actually play music. So, we’re looking forward to it and are very excited.

Yoohei) Very nice. Very nice. Just one night, right?

Luke) Yup.

Yoohei) OK.

Luke) Yeah, one night and then we go to Korea.

Yoohei) Daikanyama is kind of close to Shibuya. You know Shibuya, right?

Dawson) Yeah, we’re actually staying there.

Yoohei) So, “cough drops” - it’s now released. I’ve heard it. It was really, really good. I loved it.

Dawson) Thank you.

Yoohei) Yeah, yeah.

Dawson) Thank you so much.

Yoohei) Really good. So how was production? Can I ask you about the recording and everything?

Luke) Yeah, I can’t even remember. We wrote it a bit ago, but it’s actually a cool song, like the way it’s kind of come about because we started played it live for a while and then started getting it kind of natural I guess, people started liking it because they heard it live and it’s a really good live song so it translates well cuz coming out of the pandemic and playing shows again we wanted to write something that could work well live again. Cuz it’s sometimes easy to write music that we’ll just stream or whatever… cuz that’s all we were doing for 2 years. Kind of sitting in our bedrooms and, you know, just trying to write songs, so I think it’s one of our favorite songs to play just because it works so well live.

Yoohei) So you guys are more into LA or NY kind of style?

Dawson) Of music or surf or what?

Yoohei) Surf.

Dawson) Well, we’re all from San Diego which is an hour and a half from LA and so we all grew up surfing there. That’s I think that’s where our hearts lie.

Col) West Coast, the best coast.

Dawson) Yes, the East Coast gets very cold, so.

Yoohei) I’m in a band called Alexandros

Dawson) Oh, very cool.

Yoohei) And we did the recording in New York.

Col) Nice. Whereabouts did you record?

Yoohei) I think in Brooklyn.

Dawson) Yeah.

Yoohei) And New Jersey. Yeah, yeah.

Dawson) Oh, OK. Cool man.

Yoohei) It was really nice, it was really nice.

Dawson) We’ll have to check you guys out.

Yoohei) Yeah, please do.

Dawson) I’d love to hear your music.

Yoohei) But I think for rock and roll kind of music I think we should go to LA. That’s what they say.

almost monday) Yup.

Yoohei) That’s what they told me, so I’m looking forward to it.

Dawson) Yeah, LA is definitely even in the last like decade, LA’s become just a huge hub for just really all music. Music, I mean in the early 2000s and stuff, of course, Strokes and all those NY bands were huge but, yeah. It seems like NY’s a bit expensive to live in if you’re an artist. Struggling artist. So a lot of people live in LA.

Yoohei) So how is Japan so far?

Luke) It’s really cool. We’ve had some time, cuz again we’re staying in Shibuya, so we’ve been walking around, went to karaoke last night.

Yoohei) Oh, you went to karaoke. Oh really.

Luke) It was fun. Had Japanese BBQ, which was really good.

Yoohei) Yakiniku.

Luke) Yeah.

Yoohei) Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Luke) It’s been quite – the main difference I notice is the alleyways. It’s like a big city, but the alleyways are really unique to it. The different little bars and things like that have been really cool to see.

Yoohei) When did you guys arrive here?

Luke) 2 days ago?

Yoohei) 2 days ago. OK. So rainy, right? It was rainy.

Dawson) It was actually pretty good. We’ve had really good weather so far.

Yoohei) That’s good. Japan is kind of rainy, moist. I think now is a really good time for traveling. It was really hot maybe a month ago. So you guys are into Japanese anime and culture. I heard that you guys are into HUNTER × HUNTER.

Luke) Yeah, Dawson turned me on to that.

Col) Actually, we all watched the first arc together when we were in hotel rooms together. We were all watching it.

Yoohei) Do you know HUNTER × HUNTER’s before animation called YuYu Hakusho?

Dawson) I don’t.

Yoohei) You don’t, OK. I was into that.

Dawson) OK.

Yoohei) Because my generation is into Yu Yu Hakusho.

Dawson) Well HUNTER X×HUNTER isn’t like HUNTER X×HUNTER from the ’90s, right? And then they kind of made it, like, did a new updated version

Yoohei) Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Dawson) The anime.

Yoohei) I think they became famous in 2000.

Dawson) Sounds right.

Yoohei) ‘90s are for Yu Yu Hakusho. The pre

Dawson) Gotcha.

Yoohei) So here’s the generation difference.

Dawson) I’ll have to check it out. I’d love to.

Yoohei) I think for my generation, Yu Yu Hakusho’s really

Dawson) Gotcha. You think it’s better than HUNTER × HUNTER?

Yoohei) I think so. Yu Yu Hakusho.

Dawson) OK.

Yoohei) So this program, my program is called “Oto Okashi.” It’s on Saturday from 3 pm. So do you guys have any specific artist that’s really good and for this program that you recommend? Except for yourself.

Col) Oh, artists that play on it.

Yoohei) Exactly, yeah. Or into or your most biggest influence.

Col) Influences. I think we all have like kind of different ones - some similar, but we all like, um… I like the Strokes a lot.

Yoohei) Oh, Strokes, yeah.

Col) The Shacks. I’ve been listening to them recently a lot. I like Beach House, I like, I don’t know tons of different things. Arctic Monkeys.

Luke) Babe Rainbow.

Yoohei) Cool. So we’re gonna play your songs, but before that, maybe if you guys have a recommendation. One track you want to play and show it to Japanese fans?

Dawson) Mmm. One song.

Dawson) Umm, I’d probably say a song called “Elvis’ Flaming Star” by Pond.

Yoohei) OK.

cough drops / almost monday
1曲目にお送りしたのはalmost mondayで『cough drops』。ライブで大盛り上がりな事間違いない曲なんですけど、どことなく言わずともなバンドのオマージュなのかな？みたいな所もね(笑)
almost monday、おと、をかしで何回か曲かけた事ありますけど、アメリカ・サンディエゴを拠点として活動する3人組バンドで、2019年デビューでメンバー全員なんと1998年生まれという事でね。Britpopが終わり狂った後の(笑)若いバンドなんですけど、さっきのArctic Monkeysもそうですし、色んなミュージシャンからインスピレーションを受けて独自のスタイルを確立しているという感じなんですけど。すごく明るくて、でもちょっとアメリカのカラッとした雰囲気がすごい出てるなっていう。だからさっきのもArctic Monkeysのオマージュっぽい曲なんだけど、ウェットすぎず、カラッとした印象で、それはそれで全然違う印象を受けるっていう。あそこまでのリフを使っていながら、全然違う印象を受けるっていうのが、almost mondayの持っている力というかオリジナリティなのかなとすごく思いました。おと、をかしでは今年5月に曲をかけましたが、あっという間に人気が出まして、10/5にリリースされましたEP『cough drops』を引っ提げて遂に初来日を果たしたという事で。先程『cough drops』の1曲目の『cough drops』を聴いて頂きました。

『cough drops』について軽く話を聞いたんですけど、2019年デビューという事もあって、「さあこれからライヴで世界盛り上げていくぜ！」って時にコロナ禍になってしまって、なかなかライヴができなかったと思うんですよ。almost mondayもそうだと思うんですけど、この『cough drops』もライヴ映えする曲という事で、そういう曲を作りたかったという事で。ストリーミング用の曲、例えばベッドルームとかで…宅録で作る曲も簡単で良いんだけど、やっぱりライブで皆声出してはしゃいでっていう所が好きだから、そういう曲を作りたかったという事で、この曲を作ったわけで。確かにライブ盛り上がりそうな曲だなと思うし、すごく好きな曲だと本人達も言ってました。

sunburn / almost monday
「almost monday」て「もう少しで月曜日」ということで、おと、をかしにはぴったりなタイトルではあるんだけど、人によっては「もうすぐ月曜日か…憂鬱だな」と思っちゃうようなバンド名ですけど。でもそこもちょっといいなというね。この楽曲を聴いてたらすごく思うというか。日本ではサザエさん症候群みたいなのもありますけどalmost mondayも若干そういう匂いもしつつな感じです。青春の終わりを感じるような楽曲の雰囲気がこのバンド名に通じてるなーと聴きながら思いました。

RN ホワイトミュージックさんからのリクエストで(SNOW SOUNDを)かけました。もう1通メッセージ来てまして、RN ゆきさんなんですが、「今週20歳の誕生日を迎えたので一番好きなSNOW SOUNDを聴きたいです」。おめでとうございます！これはかけて良かったね！
